"Dope"

“The Wood” is one of my favorite movies. When I found out the same writer/director of that film, Rick Famuyiwa, did “Dope” I was excited about it.

This film is more than kids wanting to bring back the golden age of the 90s. The story is funny, dramatic and has a lot of heart. Shamiek Moore, who plays Malcolm, makes a great debut. Tony Revolori and Kiersey Clemons, who also makes a great debut, play Malcolm’s friend Jib and Diggy. A$AP Rocky is entertaining as one of the drug dealers who “befriends” Malcolm. There are a slew of other rappers who have acting roles.

There is a lot of use of the N-word but is vital to the context of the story. The story also touches upon racial issues and gets to the reflection of society.
