"Short Cuts" (1993):
“Is that your face or did your neck throw up?”- Doreen
Lyle Lovett playing a baker should alone make this film a classic. The cast is so splendidly stellar that of this capacity may never ever ever happen again. Brace yourself: Madeleine Stowe, Tim Robbins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michael Beach, Peter Freakin’ Gallagher, Frances McDormand, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Penn, Julianne Moore, Lili Taylor, Matthew Modine, Lily Tomlin, Andie McDowell, Lori Singer, Jack Lemmon and Bruce Davison.
Apparently LA has suburbs. The film is like an extended episode of “Cheaters” with “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” set in the suburbs of LA. The film is three hours and nine minutes and very entertaining. To see Robert Downey Jr. in his cornball acting glory that his so signature to his ability is good too. Julianne Moore is an OG to being naked onscreen. The stories intersect so well that it is completely unknown where it is going to turn but makes for a good surprise. Lois (Jennifer Jason Leigh) for one is a stay at home sex operator who while talking about giving oral sex is changing her child’s diaper. So erotic and awesome in a strange way of course. A cartoon called “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” may be worth a watching.
What makes the cast so great is what all of them go to achieve in their careers and how, in some way, they meet each other again. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Madeleine Stowe, although shared no scenes in this film, worked together on “Revenge.” For Chris Penn, he puts a performance to be known for instead of just his untimely death. “Short Cuts” is that late night movie treat with laughter in humanity.
